Is olive oil fraud a problem in the industry? YES! 60 Minutes – on CBSN aired a program headlined Don't fall victim to olive oil fraud. This report looked to the Mafia as being heavily involved in the alteration of olive oil for export to the US. They pointed out that much of the product coming into the US is, in fact, fraudulent, filled with additives designed to lower the cost of goods and in some cases containing no olive oil at all. Sadly the report is true.
The truth is that the Mafia is only part of the problem. The overall industry itself has been challenged with the rising popularity of olive oil and the issues of dealing with competition. Acquiring retail shelf space has become a challenge that requires a very low cost of goods in order to be competitive and still make a profit. Growers and producers have responded by seeking low cost methods of production and using additives that both lower the cost and, unfortunately lower the product quality.
